Prayer – based on Isaiah 63-64

confession

Father God, creator of heaven and earth, we worship You as the One speaking in righteousness, mighty to save.

In justice You rule the nations, and in holiness You avenge the sins and sinfulness of those in rebellion against You.  There will be a day at the return of our Lord, Jesus Christ, that He the rider will strike the rebellion of the nations with the sword of his mouth.  His Name is the Word of God.  The armies of heaven will follow Him, the Faithful and the True Son of Man – the King of kings and the Lord of lords.

We will tell of your kindness, of your deeds which is to be praised – all the things You have done for us according to your compassion and many kindnesses. You declared those whom You saved your people, your sons and daughters, because You are their Saviour.  As a loving Father You were distressed when we were distressed and Your Presence saved us.  In love and mercy You redeemed us and carried us like your own children.

Yet, Lord, we have rebelled; we have grieved your Spirit.  Our sins are like a wall between us, as we sometimes wonder if You have taken from us your Holy Spirit.    Once we enjoyed the rest of the Spirit of the Lord, like cattle following their master, You guided us to follow You, all for your glory.

Dear Lord, we cry out for You.  Look down from heaven and see from your lofty throne, holy and glorious and show us your zeal and glory.  Reveal to us once again your compassion and tenderness.  You are our Father, you are our Redeemer.

We pray that You will keep us from wandering away from You, so that our hearts may become hardened, and we may not revere You.  Restore us as your servants.  Restore your church who are trampled by sinful people.

We thank You, Lord, that you opened the heavens to come down into our misery and sinful state when You sent your Son, Jesus Christ to become our Saviour. our Redeemer, our Mediator, our friend.  When the best we could offer as righteousness was like an unclean and filthy rags, when we shrivelled up like leafs in the summer sun.

We confess that we are clay in your hands.  Your are the Potter, and we are the work of your hands.  Do not remember our sins forever,; look upon us, we pray as You would look at your beloved Son. Make your church your holy and glorious temple with Jesus Christ the Cornerstone. Remove the ruins in our midst, and do not hold back your mercy in Jesus Christ, our Redeemer, and your guidance, O Holy Spirit.

Hear us as we pray.  Amen.
