Attending Communion

A sense of our own utter unworthiness is the best worthiness that we can bring to the Lord’s Table. We must deeply feel our complete indebtedness to Christ for all we have. Our hopes are rooted in this feeling. This is the best emotion we can bring with us. The very thought of feeling literally worthy. This shows secret self-righteousness. It proves us unfit for the Lord’s Table in God’s sight. We are sinners when we first come to the throne of grace. We will be sinners till we die. Converted, changed, renewed, sanctified, we remain sinners still. Yet, it is not like before, since sin is not the pattern of a believer’s new life. In summary, no one is truly worthy to receive the Lord’s Supper without deeply feeling that he is a miserable sinner. (J.C. Ryle)
